Aetherian
The Aetherians are intelligent celestial beings that dwell within the aether. They were born some time after the Shattering when the gods of the Old Pantheon died. When these older gods died, their physical bodies became the sun, the moons and the other planets. Their divine aspects became scattered memories which took on a sentience of their own. Although they demonstrate tremendous magical capability, they are still far from ever being considered true gods as they make up fragments of what they used to be.
Aetherians by nature are very inquisitive, looking to seek out knowledge and absorb the scattered memories of the gods. Their personalities largely stem from the first memories that they are born from. However, due to their minds being considered incomplete compared to mortals, Aetherians are known to have strong reactions to incorporating memories which they find unpleasant. An Aetherian in a state of shock and panic can be incredibly dangerous to be around as they unleash volatile, chaotic waves of magical energy around them as they attempt to process the new information they've acquired.
Despite this, in the events following the Shattering, many Aetherians chose to become guides for mortals, assisting them in building entire civilizations. In many respects, they became revered as gods themselves. They observed and shared their wisdom with mortals not only to help them survive, but to also discover more about themselves.
Celestial Council
The closest the Aetherians have to a government among themselves is the Celestial Council, a group of overseers who strive to regulate how Aetherians interact with mortals. They desire to make sure that any Aetherian influence does not result in one civilization gaining an unfair advantage over another. They also heavily restrict what memories other Aetherians are allowed to absorb. For example, the memories of the god Vaskus are strictly off limits due to the risk of such a malevolent entity returning in some form.
