Cognill Islands

The Cognill Islands were an island chain found off the eastern coast of Eidyn, in the Leviathan Areas. They lay far to the east offshore from Oceanfell, Varden, and Gierkliff, with the closest land being Windseeker Eyrie.

The Cognill Islands were a barrier against the huge waves and currents that ran uninterrupted from the distant Nautilus Ocean, dispersing them before they reached land on mainland Eidyn. As a result, the Cognill Islands were battered by the seas.

Geography

The Cognill Islands numbered in the dozens, and the archipelago ran from north to south. The southernmost island lay at the same latitude as Shuang, and the northermost along the latitude of Gierkliff. The islands themselves were rocky and barren, especially on their east faces, which served as breakwaters against enormous waves. These waves were caused by the large oceanic gyre that existed between Eidyn's eastern shore and Khyorgan's western continents, between which there were few if any landforms to wear down the waves. As a result, the waves that slammed into the Cognill Islands were known for their brutality.

While the eastern shores were assaulted by the waves regularly, the western shores of the islands were somewhat spared, and a few calm beaches could be found here. Some seabirds and tide pool-dwelling life can be found making their home in these slightly sheltered spots.

It was theorized by Eidynese scholars that the islands may be a remnant of a much larger landform that was slowly destroyed by the waves, but this speculation is not supported by substantiative evidence.

History

Due to the region's fearsome conditions, the Cognill Islands were rarely home to permanent settlements. Some remote outposts were established here by Human and Orcish whalers and fisherman from Eidynese countries such as the Kronen Empire.

Creatures

• Starry Frigatebird - A type of frigatebird. Males have a deep black coloration with white tips on their feathers, giving them an appearance reminiscent of a starry nighttime sky, for which they are named.
• Stilt Crab - A type of crab with long, thin legs and a small body.
• Glossy Star - A starfish that has an iridescent coloration.
