Leviathan Areas was the name for the ocean surrounding Valordyn and Emsius. Made up of several constituent seas of varying temperature and depth, the Leviathan Areas were so named in recognition of the Leviathan.
The Leviathan Areas bordered the Nautilus Ocean on both its eastern and western sides. To its north, they bordered Atsalur's Ocean.
Oceanography
The Leviathan Areas were known by different names to varying peoples of Valorum and Eidyn. Overall, they consisted of over 1.7 billion square kilometers of water. The immense size of the Leviathan Areas made them incredibly difficult to cross. Travelers from Valordyn would nonetheless eventually successfully navigate the Leviathan Areas and reach Khyorgan in spite of the associated difficulty.
Another complication of the large size and vast spans of uninterrupted water were that the Leviathan Areas generated enormous uninterrupted waves. In some areas these waves were reduced by seamounts or undersea canyons, but elsewhere, they battered the coastlines badly and made them unsuitable for habitation by most mortal races. Barrier islands such as the Cognill Islands could take the brunt of these oceanic forces and spare coastal regions of mainland Eidyn by extension.
The Leviathan Areas were home to numerous types of sea life, including fish and marine invertebrates. Some sealife in the Leviathan Areas stored elemental Ekati within their bodies, such as the Arcanowar, a cnidarian that could spray liquified Ekati to defend itself from predators, or the fish caught in the vicinity of Shui, which had traces of Ekati within their scales. The Leviathan Areas were also inhabited by some truly massive creatures, such as the Godfish and the Harpoon Kraken.
Seas
- Leir Sea - Leir was an ocean inhabited by the Wasari tribe of Water Elves and the Erda tribe of Vulcan Elves. Under the guidance of the whale god Wasa, the Wasari lived in magically crafted towers that high into the sky and deep below the ocean, while on the volcanic and barely habitable Erda Isles, the Erda followed the god Ardas who took the shape of a lava dragon. After conflict between the two tribes escalated to a conflict between their patron deities, the whole of Leir was dried up and turned into a desert.
- Salt Sea - the waters south of Valorum. Here, the Kashima Archipelago could be found. It was known to be home to the immense Godfish, including one named named Namazu who the inhabitants of the Isle of Zakana would sacrifice food tributes to in thanks for it devouring any pirates or invaders who threatened them.
- Magterian Sea - The sea surrounding Emsius. It was home to the Sea Elf nation of Marperio.
- Dariel Sea - A sea in Emsius which separated the regions of Cyrasia and Lithica
